Mixing business and pleasure meets new boundaries with figure competitor Lanelle Phillips. Born in the Bahamas and raised in both the US and Freeport, Lanelle loves both cultures and has made a name for herself as a Real Estate mogul with an impressive dossier. Her interview with IFBB Pro Marie Ann Newman, better known as Mo, proved this competitor is well on her way to excitement on stage and in her business ventures.
At the age of ten Lanelle and her brother and father moved to Colorado where Lanelle's mother's family lived to attend American schools. This led to more travelling in the U.S. which included attending high school in Vermont, college in Florida and working in Chicago. In her mid-twenties Lanelle made her way back to the Bahamas and says "Dad used to say you can take the girl out of the island, but you can't take the island out of the girl." As she gets older she admits she misses the culture of the States and certain foods; since some items are higher priced or scarce on the island.
On the island, Lanelle has created a career and a lifestyle that many dream of. As owner of Lanelle Phillips Realty; she has excelled in the business while others have faded. She credits much of it to her staff for being so amazing and states that Melissa, her office manager has much to do with her success's. She has to admit because of the economy she has a bit more time on her hands but her amazing staff allows her extra time to concentrate in other areas.
Lanelle is focusing on two major components in her life right now; one is realty and the other is competing. At the moment, Lanelle's business is strictly in the Bahamas but she is looking forward to an upcoming crossover with an European company in Miami. This business venture will focus on the purchases of docks for the increasing number of yachts needing moorings in the region. In the Freeport area there are many private marina's where docks can be purchased in a good location; just fifteen minutes from South Florida.
Her other focus is competing in the upcoming Central American Championships. When Mo asks how she got involved in competing Lanelle answers candidly about her addiction to drugs and alcohol recovery. Through her recovery she began living healthier and replaced the local happy hour with time in the gym. As she became healthier Lanelle kept challenging herself and hired a coach. Her foray into the sport began with three shows in a row but she doesn't recommend that; she says laughingly. She realizes that unlike most sports "you rely on just you." It's a self challenging sport and in the end the outcome is based on how badly you want it.
Lanelle will be putting herself to the test when she competes in the Central American Championships. She explains "there will be six pro cards given out during this show" but the Caribbean standards are different than in the United States. Body Fitness internationally, the equivalent to Figure in the U.S., is mainly comprised of ex- bodybuilders so many of the competitors have size. She has size and is leaning up nicely. The date of this renowned international competition is September 24/25 and she feels this will be a true test. The two day event has a twenty four hour turnaround time between the prejudging and competition. That means 24hours with minimal water; which any competitor can empathize with as being a challenge. Lanelle is looking forward to the competition and plans to represent the Bahamas with the best package she can bring in.
Look for Lanelle to join Marie Ann Newman and Carol Medina hosting interviews at the Ft. Lauderdale International Boat show as part of the Getaway Girls.
