Whitehouse Hears from Marine Industry Leaders about Economy
Senator Sheldon Whitehouse held a roundtable at the International Yacht Restoration School to discuss.

August 24, 2011

U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse held a roundtable discussion at the International Yacht Restoration School Wednesday morning about the issues facing boat builders, marinas, and marine equipment manufacturers and suppliers in this tough economy. Whitehouse teamed with the Rhode Island Marine Trades Association to hear from marine industry leaders on what they need to succeed and grow. Governor Lincoln Chafee also participated in the discussion.

“The marine trades industries are a significant source of jobs in Rhode Island, especially here in the East Bay,” said Whitehouse. “Hearing from these industry leaders today about the challenges they face will help me as I fight for policies in Washington that will help them grow and create more jobs.”

The meeting featured presentations from the International Trade Administration, the Rhode Island Manufacturing Extension Service, and the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation (continued).

World’s Largest Yacht Too Big to Park
August 24, 2011, 1:09 PM ET

Maybe there is such a thing as too much yacht.

Roman Abramovich arrived in the French port of Antibes this week aboard his boat, Eclipse, which is the largest yacht in the world at more than 530 feet.

The Russian billionaire and his girlfriend were apparently planning to stay at Mr. Ambramovich’s villa in town. Because I guess the boat’s 30 cabins, two swimming pools and disco hall proved a little confining.

Yet when they pulled up to the Antibes dock, they encountered a problem: no parking space.

Antibes is the largest yachting harbor in Europe. But apparently, there is only one berth big enough for Eclipse. But it was already taken by Saudi Prince Al-Waleed Bin Talal and his 265-foot yacht Kingdom 5KR. (5KR was featured in the James Bond film “Never Say Never Again.”)

According to a report in the Daily Mail, a port official said that Abramovich and his family were welcome to disembark, but “with a yacht this size it was not possible.”(continued).

Efrem ''Skip'' Zimbalist III discusses his famous dad, his St. Petersburg Boat Show, and direction of Show Management

by John Hawley

To obtain the most authoritative voice on what is in store at the St. Petersburg Boat Show, which will take place on Nov. 16-19 at Bayfront Yacht Basin, St. Petersburg, Florida one needs to talk to the president and CEO of a company named Active Interest Media. AIM’s subsidiary Show Management owns or manages five of the Florida boat shows including the Ft. Lauderdale International Boat show and Miami Yacht and Brokerage Show that were previously run by Yachting Promotions Inc. (YPI). While the successes of YPI are legendary in the yachting world everyone over 40 years of age will recall the family name of AIM and Show Management’s president and CEO as his father was Efrem Zimbalist Jr. who played the lead role in the television series the FBI. There is also a famous sister named Stephanie who played the role of Laura Holt opposite Pierce Brosnan, in the hit 80’s television series Remington Steele. His other sister Nancy was also a success playing tennis and making a career at Phillip Morris promoting women’s tennis and their Virginia Slims tournament (continued).
